Petition: Towns and Regions for Refugees

Vendredi, 5 Août 2016

Following its Call for a Real Common European Asylum Policy, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) started a petition on Change.org calling upon European states to act for refugees with towns and regions.

Last summer, heads of European states and governments agreed on relocating 160,000 refugees over a period of two years. One year later, less than 3,000 refugees have been relocated to any European country. The CEMR therefore calls for the implementation of monitored and well-managed relocation procedures.

Local and regional leaders are at the forefront of the challenge to host refugees and preserve social cohesion in their territories. They need real support from all levels of political leaderships, and ask European institutions and member states to guarantee to the necessary resources to host refugees, via targeted financing for the towns and regions.

The CEMR also emphasizes the need of consultation between local, regional and national levels to allow a better coordination of actions and the exchange of best practices.

The petition can be signed on Change.org, an open petition platform available in twelve languages allowing its users to start campaigns and mobilize supporters. Anyone can start a petition: you too!
